The Sweetwater Camera Club is indeed honored this month to have as our guest speaker, Mr. Nathan Todd of the Douglas County Sentinel Photo Department. You are invited to attend this Thursday evening, March 13 at 7 p.m. in the dining hall of St. Julian’s Episcopal Church, 5400 Stewart’s Mill Road here in Douglasville.
Nathan’s photography appears daily throughout West Atlanta and at the Douglas County Sentinel website at http://www.douglascountysentinel.com. As one of the key photographers for the Sentinel, Nathan is called upon to photograph everything from high energy sporting events, political figures, ribbon cuttings, business meetings, school children, concerts, outdoor festivals and disasters such as the tornado we had at Kroger’s on Chapel Hill Road this week . . . the list of his subject matter is seemingly infinite and it all takes place right here in our community. Nathan plans to bring some of his favorite images of people and events to show us. He will also be the judge of our People photo contest as well as the Callaway Gardens Field Trip contest. If you attended the Callaway Gardens Field Trip, please bring your best images for all to see. It is my understanding that at least one will be chosen as the “Field Trip Contest Winner.” If you didn’t attend the Callaway Gardens Field Trip, you might find the Macon Cherry Blossom Festival field trip on Saturday, March 29th interesting. You can read more about this on the SCC website at http://sweetwatercameraclub.org/field-trips/2008/march-macon-cherry-blossom. For those of you who haven’t paid your yearly dues of $18/individual or $30 per family, Jim Gardner will be on hand to take money and hand out membership cards. Participating in club sponsored Field Trips is one of the best benefits of membership . . . We will also have a field trip to Atlanta’s own historic Oakland Cemetery on Saturday, April 26th. Stay tuned for more field trip announcements – we plan on having at least one field trip per month for the entire year. Just a reminder of upcoming events in this area which might interest our club members - The Taste for Douglasville Arts will occur on Saturday May 17th from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and an even bigger event which has long term possibilities and a major focus on ART and beautiful gardens rather than FOOD is the first annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival which will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 6th and 7th. The Penny McHenry festival is being promoted state wide and stands to become one of the key summer festivals in this region. It has major political backing and is presented by Douglas County & Historic Douglasville Georgia as well as the City of Douglasville Convention and Visitors Bureau. You can read much more at http://www.pennymchydrangeafestival.com/. SCC Member Linda Britt can give you first hand information since she is involved in the planning of this series of events. As always, Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings at no charge. If you want to maintain a continuing interest in the many facets of photography, there is no greater stimulus in this area than becoming involved with the Sweetwater Camera Club. Participation in the contests is voluntary. You are welcome to be a spectator as well as a participant. We strive to provide a high quality learning experience and an entertaining evening for all. We hope to see you Thursday!
